'Oak Tree' Ward Garden, East Lothian Community Hospital, Haddington

We were commissioned by NHS Lothian Charity to redesign an existing open space at the East Lothian Community Hospital in Haddington.  This area is to be a safe and vibrant space  for use by dementia and mental health patients.

The space was previously of limited use therefore the focus of our design was to create variety of functional spaces along the circular route.  We introduced number of zones including growing area with raised planters, central seating zones with shade canopies and scented planting, woodland seating zone with woodland planting and series of raised planters with seats and sensory planting.

The mounded area, inaccessible to patients, was turned into enclosed wildflower meadow enhanced with ornamental planting and variety of screening trees.  Proposed planting palette was designed to enhance biodiversity and encourage wildlife into the site as well as provide year round healing properties for staff and patients.
