Staff Wellbeing Courtyard, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

We have been commissioned by NHS Lothian Charity to redesign an existing courtyard at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

This courtyard was to be a flexible, welcoming and calm space for use as a Wellbeing Courtyard by staff. It was to cater for small events, small social groups and more solitary seating areas. Within the courtyard we have creating three distinct character zones, 1. Social zone, 2. Transitional zone, 3. Calm/rest zone.

The design promotes being outside in all weathers, times of day and seasons with use of considered planting for year round interest. The creation of sheltered area with a larger covered shelter will allow use at all times of day and all seasons. Two large timber pergolas not only make the space look vibrant but also create feeling of privacy and comfort. Natural materials such as timber and natural stone boulders bring warmth, natural softness and interest to them to create a connection with the natural world that exists beyond the hospital building.
