'Oak Tree' Ward Garden, ELCH Haddington

We have been commissioned by NHS Lothian Charity to redesign an existing courtyard at the East Lothian Community Hospital in Haddington.  This courtyard is to be a safe and vibrant space  for use by dementia and mental health patients.

The space is currently of limited use therefore the focus of our design was to create variety of functional spaces along the circular route.  We introduced number of zones including growing area with raised planters, central seating zones with shade canopies and scented planting, woodland seating zone with woodland planting and series of raised planters with seats and sensory planting.

The mounded area, inaccessible to patients, is to be turned into enclosed wildflower meadow enhanced with ornamental planting and variety of screening trees.  Proposed planting palette is going to enhance biodiversity and encourage wildlife into the site as well as provide year round interest for staff and patients.
