Japanese- inspired Garden, East Lothian, UK

This project involves the remodelling of front and rear gardens to a property in Prestonpans.

The brief was to provide a contemporary Japanese-inspired garden with architectural plantings, incorporating the clients’ existing collection of plants, with scent being a key consideration. The objective is a beautiful and inspirational garden which provides shelter and privacy where needed, without compromising the level of natural light within the space.

There is a focus on sharp contrasts of colour material, with dark colour woodwork contrasting with light colour surfaces and mixed planting. Stepping stones lead across a pool into the garden, which then allows access to either the dining area, through a defined post fence, or into the ‘island garden’.  The stepping stones terminate at a stone bench under a pergola arch, which provides a view back through the garden beneath the light foliage of the two ornamental trees.

The dining area is enclosed on two sides by a raised planter, and on the others by planting, with a post fence providing further definition between the two areas of the garden.
