This project was commissioned by the Hunter Foundation and Strathclyde University to produce a feasibility study and concept design for the Hunter Global Leadership Centre in the grounds of Ross Priory, near Balloch. The intent for the Leadership centre was to create a place that allowed partici-pants to meet, and discuss ideas in a natural setting.
The Hunter Global Leadership Centre buildings were designed to be “buildings of the landscape”, in that they are part of the lochside landscape. The landscape concept was inspired by the form of the historic shoreline, as a means of providing a structure and connecting the landscape and proposed buildings. It frames the views with tree lines and water features enhancing the idea of the new being seamlessly woven into the existing natural landscape.
The proposed water feature with planted island was inspired by the Scottish landscape and is de-signed as infinity pool with naturally treated water. Meandering footpaths provide scenic routes through retained and newly created habitats of woodland, wildflower meadow, reed bed and native hedges.
The plants chosen are to be native, low maintenance and suitable for the unique site conditions, with a mix of shrubs, herbaceous and annual plants is to enhance biodiversity and encourage bees. A variety of tree sizes will allow to recreate natural setting and mitigate the visual impact.
